Abstract

On analysing questionnaire data, collected for PhD research, four potential new subscales, Gamer Identity, Game Amotivation, In-Game Advancement Motivation, and Solo Relaxation-Gameplay, were identified. These offer initial insights into the complexity of motivation for game play, particularly in areas not fully explored by mainstream SDT research, such as the salience of in-game advancements when considered as feedback, and the possibility of problem gameplay being associated with amotivation and/or a controlled orientation.
