    Abstract

    ON SCREEN / OFF SCREEN is an exploration into the lives of the leading ladies of Charlie Chaplin. Delving into the world of silent film, the dancers strive to find a path through their on and off screen personae and lives. Relationships are built and tested as the dancers exorcise their Chaplin demons.

    In Spring 2012 Lorraine Smith was invited to create a choreographic commission for the University of Northampton's undergraduate company Playgrounds Dance Company. The commission ON SCREEN / OFF SCREEN was based on the world of silent film, slap stick and the lives of the leading ladies of Charlie Chaplin.
    Lorraine Smith (Silversmith Dance Theatre 2006-2014) uses the art of dance and storytelling to create gripping intimate live performance, revealing the delicacies and complexities of how environments and social structures affect identity and human interactions. Lorraine constantly engages in practice based research through performance, always creating with an aim to evolve choreographic knowledge and approaches. Research includes the creation and performance of character for live performance.
