Abstract

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to explore the current state of peer research and co-production in mental health research, identify existing practices, challenges, and opportunities for improvement, and to provide recommendations for promoting greater inclusivity and representation in this field.

Introduction: Mental health research has historically lacked representation and inclusivity, leading to potential biases and gaps in our understanding of diverse populations’ experiences and needs. Peer research and co-production are crucial in ensuring that mental health research is equitable, representative, and responsive to the diverse communities it serves. By considering peer research and co-production in mental health research, this review has the potential to enhance the quality, relevance, and applicability of mental health research findings, ultimately leading to more equitable and effective mental health services and interventions for diverse communities. This scoping review will help us to understand the extent and type of evidence in this area and identify research gaps.

Inclusion criteria: The review will include research focusing on peer research and co-production in mental health research and published in peer-reviewed journals since 2010. Eligible studies will explore peer research and co-production practices, challenges, and recommendations in the context of mental health research across various populations, settings, and methodologies. Reviews and meta-analyses will be excluded from data analysis. Empirical studies, and conceptual papers addressing peer research and co-production in mental health research will be considered for inclusion.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search will be conducted across multiple databases, including MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL, to identify relevant studies. The search strategy will include keywords related to mental health research, peer research, co-production, representation, and related concepts. Screening and selection of eligible studies will be performed by two independent reviewers based on pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data extraction and synthesis will be carried out to identify key themes, best practices, and areas for further exploration. We will use a descriptive analytical approach with results being presented in tables and figures.
