Abstract
Introduction and Aim: With aging populations and overburdened healthcare systems, dissatisfaction with musculoskeletal (MSK) care in the UK National Health Service (NHS) is rising, particularly due to prolonged wait times for general practitioner (GP) appointments. Currently, chiropractors in the UK operate outside the NHS in a fee-for-service model, contributing to inequities in care access that conflict with principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Integrating chiropractors into NHS services at the community level could alleviate system strain and enhance MSK care delivery. This study aims to explore the current environment and feasibility of integrating chiropractic care into primary care settings.
Methods: A qualitative protocol was developed to conduct semi-structured interviews with staff and patients at an integrated chiropractic/GP practice, including chiropractors, GPs, and administrative personnel. Reflexive thematic analysis will be used to identify barriers, enablers, and value derived from integrated care, with findings reported narratively.
Results: The study will identify key factors influencing the integration of chiropractic services within NHS primary care, highlighting operational barriers, facilitators, and perceived benefits from staff and patient perspectives.
Conclusion: This research will provide critical insights into the potential role of chiropractors in national healthcare provision, offering evidence to support their integration at the community level. Sharing this protocol and its findings will enable further studies evaluating the inclusion of chiropractic care in national health systems, advancing equity and access in MSK care.
