    Abstract

Don't do it! Don't agree to undertake a PhD in Sports Science, that is, without having a good idea of what the finished product might look like. A great deal of apprehension can be avoided by simply knowing where your project is headed. In this article I discuss the options that are available to students who are planning to undertake a Sport Science PhD in a UK university. Rather than exploring the finer detail of individual PhDs, which will always have features that are unique to a particular topic area, I hope to give you a good introduction to the main options that are available for compiling a PhD thesis. I also give my personal perspective on the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches.
