Public Health and the Aging Population: The role of chiropractic care

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

As the global population, including that of the United Kingdom, continues to age, the need to address the complex health challenges faced by older adults becomes increasingly urgent. By 2041, it is projected that one in four people in the UK will be aged 65 or over, highlighting the importance of comprehensive public health strategies. These challenges include multimorbidity, frailty, polypharmacy, social isolation, and cognitive decline. Chiropractic care, with its holistic focus on musculoskeletal health, plays a crucial role in managing these issues by improving mobility, reducing pain, and potentially minimizing reliance on medications. Additionally, chiropractors can significantly contribute to multidisciplinary efforts aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of the aging population. Through collaboration with other healthcare professionals and adherence to guidelines such as the WHO's Integrated Care for Older People (iCOPE), chiropractic care can be integrated into broader public health strategies to support healthy aging and maintain the quality of life for older adults.
