Abstract

Background The Hartlepool Younger and Wiser Project (Y&W) is a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Hearty Lives initiative, in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council (HBC) and the National Health Service (NHS). The aim of the project is to make an impact on the factors that can contribute to poor heart health, cardiovascular diseases and adverse health outcomes. This innovative project intends to influence the behaviour of children and young people in Hartlepool. It hopes to “support children and young people to make healthier lifestyle choices and break the cycle of ill health and premature death from CVD experienced by their parents and grandparents”.In order to meet this aim, a programme of work was developed to meet the following objectives:1. To encourage children and young people to get involved in physical activity, eat well and lead healthier lifestyles2. Increase awareness amongst children and young people about the causes of CVD through education and play3. Empower children and young people to make healthier lifestyle choices by giving them the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions4. Increase children’s self-esteem and assertiveness skills5. Increase understanding among parents and other influential adults about health and wellbeing.
