    Dr Dorothy Newbury-Birch has conducted research in alcohol for the last 10 years and her PhD examined drug and alcohol misuse amongst medical students and junior doctors. She is currently a principal investigator and North East area coordinator of the SIPS Alcohol Project – a series of randomized controlled trials funded by the Department of Health in general practice, accident, and emergency departments and in the criminal justice system. Other work includes prevalence studies of alcohol prevalence within the criminal justice system. She has worked on a rapid review of liver disease epidemiology, treatment effectiveness, and service provision in England and also led a review of reviews of alcohol and young people for the Department for Children, Schools and Families – which was used by the CMO when compiling the guidance for parents for young people drinking.
