Screens, HUDs and Holograms - Information Visualisation and Communication in Animated Films

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

Animation is increasingly being used a medium of information visualisation and communication, this includes within the diegesis of Animated films themselves via Screens, Heads Up Displays (HUDs) and Holograms. The animation within animation relies upon the manipulation of real-world mechanics and constructed visual signs to convey instructions, narrative, emotions, and ideas and brings its own set of conventions, audience expectations and in turn influences the animated content.

This paper uses case studies from animated feature films where the literature research reveals this phenomenon is mostly seen in films that were made post 1995, coinciding with the advent of Computer Generated (CG) animation. Technology developments in the animation industry and the real and imagined technology featured in them, move away from previous devices used in the form of analogue signs, magic and divination. This mirrors society’s attitude to the supernatural in life and in entertainment, denoting a trend away from fantasy to science fiction, a future that is fast manifesting in contemporary life.
