Abstract

The rapid growth of solar energy adoption has created a surge in demand for skilled professionals to drive this transition. However, existing solar energy education programmes often fall short in equipping students with the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required to navigate the multifaceted nature of the solar industry. This paper explores the current state of solar energy curricula, identifying key gaps between industry needs and academic training. Through an in-depth analysis of job market trends and industry expert interviews, the study highlights the critical competencies sought by employers, including technical expertise in solar system design, cost analysis, grid integration, and proficiency in specialised software. The findings reveal that while many educational programs provide a strong foundation in solar energy fundamentals, there is a need for greater emphasis on interdisciplinary skills related to industry needs and demands. This paper proposes a roadmap for curriculum development that blends academic rigor with practical industry-relevant training. The recommended approach aims to bridge the gap between theory and application, empowering the next generation of solar energy professionals’ upscaling and rescaling with the knowledge and skills to drive sustainable solar deployment. By aligning solar energy education with the evolving demands of industry, this research contributes to the development of a robust and future-ready workforce capable of accelerating the transition to a clean energy future.
