Abstract

Directed by Dr. Rachel Taparjan, Something Familiar functions as a primary Practice-as-Research (PaR) output, establishing a new methodological framework for Trauma-Informed Filmmaking (TIF).

Drawing directly upon the researcher’s doctoral findings (University of Central Lancashire, 2025) regarding trauma-informed service provision in domestic abuse contexts, this film translates theoretical safety protocols into creative documentary practice. The project explores the ethical complexities of documenting "search-for-identity" narratives—specifically within the context of Romanian adoption—through a non-extractive, safety-first lens.

By prioritising the psychological safety of both participants and crew, the film serves as a case study for a burgeoning set of ethical protocols intended for the wider UK documentary industry. International Premiere: CPH:DOX 2026.
