Abstract
Commissioned spotlight essay for the forthcoming edited volume The Barjeel: Dreams of Modern Arab Art, published by Thames & Hudson in partnership with the Barjeel Art Foundation. The invited contribution offers an original critical reading of Marguerite Nakhla’s Scene Dans Le Parc (c.1940s), exploring questions of relationality, visibility, gender and Egyptian vernacular modernism through contemporary curatorial and theoretical perspectives. Moving beyond biographical or stylistic interpretation, the essay situates Nakhla’s work within wider discussions around collective sociality, public space and more-than-human entanglements. Developed as part of a commissioned series of scholarly spotlight texts, the chapter contributes to international discourse on modern Arab art and forms part of an internationally recognised editorial publication framework with specialist advisory and curatorial review structures.
