Abstract

The interest in health information system is fast rising among global health experts. In Africa, there are ongoing calls among several stakeholders on the need to fully adopt an electronic-based health records system rather than the current widespread paper-based records system. While this has potential benefits on the longterm, the transition to a fully digitalised records system may not be without challenges, especially in Africa, where there is dearth of human and technical capacity. This review examined reported challenges in the adoption of electronic health records in some African settings, and suggested the need for African health systems to adopt a model that will strengthen existing paper-based health records while developing infrastructure for a full-fledged electronic-based records system.
