Abstract

This development paper is based on a pilot study conducted in preparation for a full study. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of project managers' work experience and project management knowledge on project performance and success within the context of Singapore's construction industry. Quantitative survey questionnaires were used to collect data from 61 participants, comprising personnel working in the construction and built environment industry of Singapore, particularly project managers, for this pilot study. The study focuses on the relationships between the number of years of participants' working experience, the seven different Project Management Knowledge Areas of the PMBOK® and Project Success phenomena. Data collected were analysed using the linear regression analysis technique and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical analysis software tool. The results from hypothesis tests showed that project scope management, project time management, and project quality management had no significant relationship with project success. This preliminary study's results contribute to the project management literature by showing that, within the context of the Singaporean construction industry, working experience is not a direct predictor of project success, whereas project scope management, project time management, and project risk management are direct predictors of project success. The full study is ongoing, and it is hoped that with a larger dataset, the outcome will either confirm or generate new knowledge that will benefit practitioners and policymakers in the construction and built environment industries.
