Abstract
Alfred Edwards, MP for Middlesbrough East 1935-50 was a maverick politician whose omission from the historiography of the 1945-51 Labour Governments is striking. Edwards, a foundry director in Middlesbrough, led a widespread campaign against his own government's plans to nationalise the steel industry in the late 1940s. Edwards campaign, which brought him national attention, is virtually absent from the written histories of the period. This paper seeks to reclaim the place of Alfred Edwards in the history of the Attlee Labour Governments.
