Abstract

York University commissioned the artwork 'The Nature of Heresy' work for the "Visual Talking Points" project. The project brought a group of York artists to engage and respond to research within humanities departments to create work that responds to current research and research culture within the Humanities Faculty. This artwork arose from The Medieval Church: From Margins to Centre conference held at York University on 26th June 2023. The work's full title is The Nature of Heresy: Knight Hospitalers, Franciscans, Cathars, Holy Women and Mystics. The work uses visual metaphors and symbols of the Cathar religion in a visual reframing of texts from the Middle Ages on mystic female saints and holy workers. Its production techniques aim to capture a visual essence of age and antiquity in the use of silk fibres and innovative textile construction. The large-scale work 80cm by 150cm was displayed publicly in the exhibition of the Visual Talking Points artworks from 19th March 2024.
