    Abstract

The technique of thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with computerized pattern recognition analysis has been shown to be a successful method for the differentiation between several different commercial polypropylene samples. For comparison purposes some of the same samples were analysed using direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometry. However, sample differentiation using the results from this method proved unsuccessful owing to the loss of entrained volatiles from the samples prior to analysis.
