Abstract

This chapter provides an outline of trauma-informed care in the criminal justice system. Introducing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA)’s approach and core principles to address trauma, this chapter challenges readers to think about offending behaviour through the lens of trauma. The implementation of trauma-informed services in prison settings are provided and evaluated on a critical level. Attention is also given to how trauma-informed care in the criminal justice system may help to reduce recidivism.
