Abstract
Let me begin with three quotations. The first, from Disney’s computer-animated fantasy Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), is a conversation between the warrior princess Raya and the dragon Sisu:
Raya: The world’s broken. We can’t trust anyone.
Sisu: Maybe it’s broken because you don’t trust anyone.[1]
Next, the plot of Avengers: Endgame (2019) – the culmination of Marvel’s 23-film ‘Infinity Saga’ – arguably pivots on this moment, when a billionaire tech genius and a super soldier, whose rivalry has energised the entire Avengers series, finally shake hands:
Tony Stark/Iron Man: You trust me?
Steve Rogers/Captain America: I do.[2]
Finally, the following exchange, between lawyer Chuck, his arch-rival and hedge fund manager ‘Axe’, and Wendy (Chuck’s wife and the in-house psychiatrist/performance coach for Axe’s fund), is from the third season of Showtime’s financial drama Billions:
Chuck Rhoades, Jr.: How do I know I can trust him?
Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod: How do I know I can trust him?
Wendy Rhoades: Trust me.[3]
