Vice Chancellor's Perception about Academic Research Commercialization in Pakistan

Abstract

Universities are responsible for providing education to large pool of societal members. However, beside education and research, academic research commercialization is another task assigned to universities. It mainly aims towards creation of an entrepreneurial platform to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Universities in developing countries like Pakistan are facing challenges in transferring of academic knowledge to industries. The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the perception of Vice Chancellors about academic research commercialization in Pakistan. The study is qualitative in nature adopting semi structured interviews of Vice Chancellors of leading universities of Rawalpindi /Islamabad. The results indicate that the universities top management is cognizant of the significance of academic commercialization. However, due to lack of qualified personnel in the field of commercialization are unable to pursue this route. Further, need of hour is applied research culture, proper incentive plans, formulation of standard policies/ strategies related to patenting, licensing and Intellectual Property.
