Abstract
Research conducted with an English police force highlights the need for a pursuit simulator in Tactical Pursuit and Containment training. By analysing focus groups with twenty-seven pursuit drivers and interviews with eleven Force Incident Managers, this study finds that a lack of realism in training negatively affects operational risk management and tactics. Resource limitations and concerns about vehicle damage serve to further constrain training and decision-making. Drivers reported that real-life unpredictability and lack of training in areas such as tactical contact were significant challenges. Thematic analysis indicated strong support for simulation-based learning, which can reduce training risks, allow practice of dangerous manoeuvres, and decrease risk aversion among both drivers and supervisors.
