Abstract

Heavy episodic drinking (HED), defined as drinking ‘at least six units of alcohol during one sitting’, has negative consequences for public health and society. It is also very prevalent around the world, especially in the European Union, which has the highest alcohol intake in the world. British and Dutch youths have particularly high rates of alcohol consumption, compared to other European countries.
